The Maine State Math Meet is the culminating event of the academic year for MAML — a celebration of mathematics, competition, and collaboration among students from across the state.
Held each April, the meet is open to all high schools in Maine, regardless of prior participation or performance during the regular season. While we do not have the capacity to reach out to every school individually, any interested school is welcome to participate.
Meet Information & Registration
All logistical information for this year’s meet — including the schedule, registration, student rosters, job assignments, and scoring — is available at our official meet site:
Meet Format
The State Meet spans the full day and is divided into three main sections:
- Morning: Individual Competition
Students complete six rounds independently, each focused on a different mathematical area or skill set. - Afternoon: Relay and Team Rounds
- In the Relay Round, students solve problems individually, but answers build upon one another and are passed down a relay “chain.”
- In the Team Round, students work together collaboratively to tackle a shared set of problems, drawing on their combined skills and teamwork.
Note: Unlike regular season meets, calculators are not permitted during any part of the State Meet.
Awards & Recognition
Awards are presented at the conclusion of the meet, including:
- Trophies for the top 7 schools in each division
- Recognition of the top students in each grade level
Meet Location
The State Meet has taken place at a variety of colleges and civic centers over the years, including Bates College, the University of Maine in Orono, and venues in Bangor and Portland. Today, the meet is held annually at the Augusta Civic Center, which provides ample space and facilities to accommodate the event.
Each year, the State Meet welcomes approximately 90–95 teams and over 800 students, along with dozens of coaches and volunteers.
